Final Sunday of the Month LGBT Film Series!
The final Sunday of each month at noon OutNAbout Glen Cove presents a film of interest to the LGBT community followed by discussion. This is a very informal event held at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove.
While the event is only open to OutNAbout Members, membership is free and there is no charge to view the film. Popcorn and light refreshments are provided and those attending can contribute to help underwrite this expense if they like. The films are not first run films as is the case with the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, but rather films that may have been released in the past but still hold relevance to the LGBT community and are especially enjoyed when viewed with friends.
Our Next Gender Free Folk Dance
Long Island Gender Free Contra Dance
Next Dance: Saturday, May 1, 1:30 pm, in the Parish Hall Dance workshop starts at 1:00 pm
Save the Date! Our Annual Pride Contra Dance will begin at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 5th.
Presented by OutNAbout Glen Cove. Please join us for our Gender-Free Contra Dance Series. Dances are only $7 and you will find there is always a live band, a caller giving instruction to all, refreshments and an opportunity to dance, listen to great music and meet and greet new friends and old. This is a wonderful time to relax and kick up your heels.
About Contra Dancing: Contra dancing is a form of American folk dancing with traditional American and Celtic music. The moves are similar to square dancing, but they are done in long lines up and down the hall. Couples progress along these lines, dancing with other couples as they go, so that everyone dances with everyone else in that line.
Each dance is taught beforehand, then the moves are called during the dance. Everyone is encouraged to dance with different partners for each dance, so you don't have to bring a partner, spouse or friend to the dance in order to join in!
Contra is a great way to get mobile, get social, and meet new people!
About the Long Island Contra Dance Series (LICDS)Dances: All LICDS dances have a Newcomer's Orientation starting at 1:00 p.m. This is a teaching session, during which the caller will teach some of the basic dance figures (balance and swing, dosidos, allemandes, etc.) and will explain how the dance is oriented and some basic dance conventions. Newcomers to contra dancing are encouraged to attend this workshop, but it is not required. Most moves are done at an easy walking pace. The regular dance begins at 1:30 p.m.
About Gender-free Contra Dancing:
Traditional contra is called with distinct gender roles, and opposite sex couples are the norm. Gender-free dancing is an opportunity for dancers to come together and contra dance in a friendly, non-gender-oriented environment. During the dance, dancers can choose to dance either role, regardless of their gender. Dancers may dance with an opposite sex partner, or a same sex partner. And, the caller uses non-gender terms instead of "ladies" and "gents" to call the dance.
Thank you to our friends with Quicksilver Country Dancers of Atlanta for the desription of contra dancing and the gender-free form of the dance!
